エクトル・ベルリオーズ（ Hector Berlioz, 1803年～1869年 ）の代表作『幻想交響曲（Symphonie fantastique）』は標題音楽の代表作とも言えるものである。オペラや歌曲ではなく、『幻想交響曲』や『イタリアのハロルド』、『劇的交響曲ロメオとジュリエット』といった"交響曲"が、文学作品に触発されて作曲されている。
