ルーアンの法曹の家に生まれたピエール・コルネイユ（ Pierre Corneille 1606年～1684年 ）は、自身も法律を学び、ルーアンの役所で官職に就きながら余暇を利用して戯曲を書いていたが、やがてパリに出て本格的に演劇の道に入る。引用した一文は、1637年に発表された、フランス演劇史上記念すべき作品とも云える悲喜劇『ル・シッド（ Le Cid ）』から。この作品は大成功を収め、あまりの人気に舞台上にまで貴族のための観覧席が設けられたという。
