芸術の序列の中で、鳥たちはこの地球上で最も偉大な音楽家である。

　1908年アヴィニョンに生まれたオリヴィエ・メシアン（Olivier-Eugène-Prosper-Charles Messiaen, 1908年～1992年）は、今年2008年がちょうど生誕100周年である。フランスのみならず20世紀を代表する世界的作曲家であるが、神学者や鳥類研究家でもあり、中でも鳥に関しては世界の鳥の鳴き声を採譜して「鳥のカタログ」というピアノ曲や「異国の鳥たち」というピアノ協奏曲を作曲しているほどである。
