記念日とはそれが未来に架けられる橋となる場合にはじめて価値を持つ。

　国連世界人権宣言（1948年）の50周年記念においてジャック・シラク（Jacques Chirac　1932年～）が行った演説から。フランスの歴代大統領はみな名文家であるが、シラクもしかりである。またシラクが話すフランス語は外国人が聞いても判りやすく明瞭である。書き言葉と話し言葉の見事な一致と言うべきだろうか。
　そんなシラク前大統領だが、つい最近（10月30日）、パリ市長時代の公金横領と背任の容疑で司法当局に起訴されたというニュースに驚かされた。いまだに政治家として人気の高い前大統領だが、大統領経験者が起訴されたのはフランスでは初めてという。
